Surname Dominance



The 33 surnames liste below represent 819 graduates of Lincoln or about 41.0% of all graduates (2,002). Of course, this does not mean that all the graduates of the same surname are from the same families. It is believed that many are, however. Not only that, but probably most Lincoln School graduates can claim kin to three or more of these 33 surnames. I claimn kingship to at least four families of the names below. In a brief conversation with the husband (a non-Lincolnite) of a graduate living in Waukegan, Illnois, he said, "When you come right down to it, looks to me like everybody in Marion is related."

It was found, in a non-scientific survey, that these same families dominated the census tracts of black families in Perry County n early 130 years ag0 (1870). Many with the same surname remain today in the ares as they did then: Oak Grove, Hopewell, Green Leaf, "Up in the Hills" "the Prairie", "Across the River," etc.
